The information day will bring the diplomatic corps to Narva
Tõnis Lukas, the Minister of Education and Research, will begin the day with a presentation in which he will introduce Estonia’s position with regard to how Ukrainian refugees can continue their education, the transition to Estonian-language education and next year’s state budget. The first half of the day will be hosted in the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences building in Narva. The study building’s coordinator Anne Kivimäe will give a presentation on the role of education in strengthening the eastern border.
The diplomats will spend the second half of the day in the Narva College of the University of Tartu, where Irene Käosaar, principal of the Narva Estonian-language State High School, will give a presentation about general education in Narva. After that, Indrek Reimand, the director of Narva College, will talk about the college’s success stories and challenges. A reception at the Narva Art Residency will finish the day.
Representatives from 25 countries will be participating in the information day.
The laying of the Narva Estonian State Gymnasium’s cornerstone
Tomorrow at 12:00 the cornerstone for the study building of the Narva Estonian State Gymnasium and the basic school campus will be laid. Around 400 students will be starting their studies at the first Narva Estonian State Gymnasium in September 2023. The building’s construction is being funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the state budget.
The address of the Narva Estonian State Gymnasium's and the basic school’s study building will be Hariduse tänav 3, Narva. The Narva Estonian State Gymnasium that is about to be established is in essence an Estonian-language educational campus that includes an Estonian-language basic school and a language-immersion basic school. In addition to what was previously mentioned, it also includes a high school with a programme completely in Estonian. The opening words at the laying of the cornerstone will come from Minister Tõnis Lukas.
Tõnis Lukas, the Minister of Education and Research, is meeting with the heads of Narva’s educational institutions to discuss issues related to the transition to Estonian-language education at a round table.
Minister Tõnis Lukas, the Ministry’s representatives and the heads of Narva’s educational institutions will be participating at the round table. Issues related to the transition to Estonian-language education will be discussed at the meeting. The new action plan will also be introduced and feedback will be received from the heads of Narva’s educational institutions.
The round table will take place from 13:45-15:15 at the Narva College of The University of Tartu.
In September 2024, the first and fourth grades will transition to Estonian-language education. In September 2025, new first and fourth grades will start their Estonian studies and the second and fifth grades that transitioned the previous year will continue. In September 2026, the new first and fourth grades will start their studies. By that point, grades 1-6 will all be receiving their education in Estonian. The Ministry of Education and Research has prepared a detailed action plan necessary for the transition and the government has given it the green light. The Parliament is currently discussing the bill necessary for the transition to Estonian-language education.
