Today and tomorrow, minister Kristina Kallas participates in the sessions of the European Council of Ministers of Education and Youth in Brussels and meet with the Swedish, French, Belgian, Spanish and Croatian ministers to discuss cooperation between the countries both in education and in the youth field.

Before her first visit to Brussels, the minister said she hopes to find a common language with the youth ministers on the topic of youth voting rights: "Estonia is one of the two countries in the EU where 16-year-olds can vote in local government elections."

"In the new coalition, we have agreed on the intention to lower the voting age to 16 in parliamentary elections as well. I am looking forward to encouraging my EU colleagues to give young people greater responsibility for speaking up in society," added Kristina Kallas.

At the session of the youth ministers, the ministers exchange ideas on how to involve young people more actively in society and its decision-making processes. The participation of Ukrainian Deputy Minister Andriy Chesnokov in the debate adds importance to the session.

At the meeting of the Ministers of Education, the progress so far in the creation of the European Education Area and the automatic mutual recognition of qualifications and study periods will be reviewed. The main focus of the session is on students' reading skills, with which Estonia stands out as a clear example.
