Today in Brussels, representatives from Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg (Benelux) countries, and the Baltic States introduced the recently enacted agreement on the automatic recognition of higher education diplomas. Minister Kallas participated in the official meetings of the EU Council of Ministers of Education and Youth.

Agreement on Automatic Recognition of Higher Education

Effective from May, the agreement allows for the automatic recognition of higher education degrees obtained in the Benelux and Baltic countries. This eliminates complex and costly recognition procedures and enables all graduates to more freely study and work across the six participating countries.

Minister Kallas emphasized that the agreement would undoubtedly enhance Estonia's competitiveness by attracting and retaining top talent. "This recognition of our higher education system opens doors for closer academic cooperation, the creation of new joint study programs, and the enhancement of the quality of higher education and research," added Minister Kallas.

EU Council of Ministers of Education and Youth Meetings

During the meetings of the EU Council of Education Ministers, the discussion topics included student mobility, AI, and teacher shortages. The focus of the Youth Ministers' meeting was on the rights of children and young people, as well as improving the quality of youth work and youth engagement.

The discussions highlighted the need to balance implementation of AI in education while ensuring the maintenance of quality education. Minister Kallas noted that the EU plays a crucial role in supporting member states' efforts to utilize the extensive possibilities of AI in education.

"We should share knowledge and lessons, offer training for teachers, formulate uniform standards, and invest in research and development," Minister Kallas said, adding, "It is most crucial to allow room for trial and experimentation so that member states can deliberately and evidentially shape educational practices."

Minister Kallas also held bilateral meetings in Brussels with counterparts from Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, France, Ukraine, and Hungary to discuss cooperation opportunities at various levels of education.
