On November 26, Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas visited the Netherlands to strengthen collaboration between the two countries and exchange experiences in implementing reforms and initiatives in higher education and research.

"I am actively seeking like-minded countries to build a stronger global network and promote innovative ideas. The Netherlands is a key partner and role model for us in terms of the quality of higher education, internationalization, and knowledge transfer. Dutch universities rank among the best in the world. During my visit, I explored opportunities to initiate joint projects and enhance bilateral research networks, especially considering that the Netherlands is one of the most popular cooperation partners for Estonian researchers," Kallas stated.

Minister Kallas met with Eppo Bruins, the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture, and Science, as well as representatives from the parliamentary education and culture committee and the leadership of Delft University of Technology. Discussions focused on funding models for higher education and research, strategies for engaging international students, the EU higher education package, and perspectives on the 10th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.

In Parliament, significant attention was given to funding cuts in education and research in both countries. These issues were highlighted by the strike of academic staff and students taking place in front of the parliamentary building. The meeting also covered topics such as early childhood education, inclusive education, and teacher training. Common ground was found on the use of digital tools and AI in education. The Netherlands, Estonia, and Austria are the only EU countries that have not adopted strict regulations on the use of mobile phones in schools.

Minister Kallas also gave an interview to the Dutch daily newspaper Het Parool, where she spoke about the success of Estonia's education system and measures to support the recruitment of new teachers.
